SARDINIA
Why coosing SARDINIA for your holiday in Italy
Sardinia is often defined as a small paradise in the heart of the Mediterranean. Its coasts and white beaches are its emblem, but there are numerous places and infinite facets that are worth discovering. We are talking about the most renowned cities and centres, the most characteristic islands and, of course, important sites of historical and cultural interest.
In Northern Sardinia you cannot help but go to the Maddalena Archipelago. This paradise consists of a total of 62 islands, of which only 2 are inhabited. In fact, the two largest islands are La Maddalena and Caprera, on which two small towns are located.
In any case, in all the islands of the archipelago you will find a fabulous sea, beaches and hidden coves where you can dive. Definitely among the things to see in northern Sardinia. The most famous are Spiaggia Rosa and Cala Spalmatore.
Continuing we find the splendid Costa Smeralda. This wonderful stretch of coast branches out from the Gulf of Arzachena to the enchanting Golfo Aranci. Its 20 km of beaches, coves and splendid coves have become a destination for VIPs and billionaires thanks to Prince Aga Khan, who made it famous in 1962. The heart of the Costa Smeralda is undoubtedly Porto Cervo, a small seaside village full of boutiques and luxury hotels. But what makes this coast unique are obviously its beaches. Among them, don’t miss the extraordinary Grande Pevero and Piccolo Pevero, but also Cala Capriccioli. Absolutely wonderful among the things to see in northern Sardinia.
La Giara, located in central-southern Sardinia, is home to a very rare species of wild horses in Italy and Europe called the “Giara Horses”. The area is home to archaeological monuments such as the famous Nuraghe of Barumini, also called “Su Nuraxi” and declared a world heritage site by UNESCO in 1997. The nuraghes are defensive towers that are found throughout the island, characterized by their truncated cone shape and made with large dry boulders.
Among the things to see in northern Sardinia, the northernmost municipality in the region could not be missing. Santa Teresa di Gallura is in fact located right in front of the famous Strait of Bonifacio. Again, the country is famous for its beaches and breathtaking coves. For example, the spectacular Rena Bianca beach, nestled between the cliffs. Or the wild Cala Sambuco, with the adjacent Grotta dell’Amore. While to the west of Santa Teresa di Gallura, the small but splendid promontory of Capo Testa extends. Here, nature lovers will experience great emotions in the Valle della Luna, a splendid 500 meter valley that slopes gently towards the sea, a fairytale place!
But the hinterland of this area also offers incredible testimonies. In Santa Maria di Gallura you will in fact find the Longonsardo Tower, built in 1590 by King Philip II of Spain. But above all, an absolute must-see in northern Sardinia is the Tomb of the Giants, an incredible megalithic site dating back to the Bronze Age.
In southern sardinia no mention needed for Cagliari. The regional capital offers countless historical, artistic and naturalistic attractions. In fact, its foundation is due to the Phoenicians, but it was subsequently colonized and occupied by the Carthaginians and the Romans. After that, it passed from the hands of the Pisans, the Spanish and the Savoys. Its history is told perfectly in its palaces, churches, museums and archaeological sites. Just 30 km from Cagliari, lies the town of Pula. Often used as a base to reach things to see in southern Sardinia, it retains a very picturesque historic centre. Among the main attractions of Pula we find the extraordinary Archaeological Site of Nora. Founded by the Carthaginians in the 8th century BC, it was one of the most powerful cities in Sardinia. It was then conquered by the Romans and abandoned due to numerous Arab incursions. Most of the ancient structures ended up underwater, but the real jewel in Nora’s cap is certainly the ancient Roman theatre. Built in the 1st century, it could hold up to 1,200 spectators.
History lovers will be able to continue west to admire the imposing Spanish watchtowers built to defend the cities from pirates.
Moving along the eastern coast of Sardinia, we encounter the fabulous Gulf of Orosei, taking its name from the municipality located in the hinterland, which preserves the Palatzos Betzos district of medieval origins. Along the Marina of Orosei you will find splendid fine sand beaches with the Mediterranean scrub behind them. Continuing south, you will encounter a series of small heavenly bays. Lovers of pristine beaches will be able to admire the astonishing Bidderosa Oasis, an hidden paradise with limited daily access.
The real jewel of this area is the Gulf of Orosei National Park. In fact, from Cala Ginepro, a magnificent beach surrounded by pink granite rocks, you will encounter a jagged coast with Mediterranean scrub overlooking the sea. An uncontaminated place, among the most beautiful in Sardinia!
