Why coosing apulia for your holiday in Italy

As you wander around Puglia in search of the most enchanting places, you will often ask yourself: how large is Puglia, but there will never be time to discover it and you will continue to travel between intricate arches, courtyards and alleys worn by salt and overlooking the sea . The beaches are sometimes long stretches of sand, other small pebble bays. Sometimes easily reachable by car, or along walkways or steps carved into the rock.

Founded by the Normans as a defense fortress against invasions from the sea. Peschici today is a famous seaside resort full of charm, with rapid development. Pleasant and lively, sunny during the day and illuminated at night, many shops selling artisan products, with a historic center very crowded with tourists. The crystal clear sea is stupendous, and many tourists reach the beaches of Zaiana, Manaccora and Gusmay.

It is a pleasant town dotted with whitewashed houses, arches and squares. From a rock ledge, Vieste overlooks the Adriatic Sea to the east of the Gargano. Vieste is a lively seaside resort, considered the tourist “Capital” of the Gargano, because it has two extensive beaches that attract many swimmers, and because it is the port of embarkation to reach the Tremiti Islands.

Let yourself be seduced by the most authentic Salento where there is no shortage of decorated buildings, even if some are typical low white houses with terraces covered with figs and tomatoes drying in the sun. Grecia Salentina is a historical wonder, a legacy of the era of Byzantine imperial rule in southern Italy, and Greek culture is everywhere in the 12 towns just south of Lecce: These include: Carpignano Salentino, Calimera, Castrignano dei Greci, Cutrofiano, Martano , Corigliano d’Otranto, Martignano, Sogliano, Melpignano, Soleto, Zollino and Sternatia. It is Salento at the southern end of Puglia which still lives today in the heritage of Byzantine culture which also includes a Greek dialect known as Grecanic or Griko.

An anthill in the shape of round arches, courtyards, alleys, which had to get tangled up to protect itself from strangers. That’s all. You have to do it too: get lost on a tour in the old city of Bari. The Cathedral of San Nicola di Bari: a majestic example of Apulian Romanesque with an unusual appearance in white limestone. A cathedral built in the 11th century to house the saint’s stolen relics in Turkey. Even today, millions of pilgrims arrive on pilgrimage from every country of the Orthodox faith.

No one can doubt the legend when Gaius Marius, sailing with his fleet in the Adriatic, released his eagle which landed on a steep cliff overlooking the sea, the place where the city would be built. Its white historic center overlooking the sea is one of the most photographed in Puglia its panoramic terraces are an enchantment open onto the sea:  Polignano a Mare is the homeland of Domenico Modugno, to whom a seafront and a statue have been dedicated, and of the eclectic and brilliant Pino Pascali.

Monopoli is a labyrinth of narrow and winding streets, the churchyards open around the corner under arches and wrought iron balconies, and the lighthouses illuminating the walls and the giant Castle tower overlooking the sea. Some fishing boats are moored on the pier and look at the Ancient Port Gate and the sea.

Heart of the trulli area, with 1500 white houses with spire. Since 1996 Alberobello has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The best way to really get to know the trulli is to look at them from above the stairs reaching the Panoramic Terrace and from above the Belvedere. At this point you can see a hill covered by a circle of white houses, splashes of color and vineyards everywhere. Locorotondo is a labyrinth of arches, streets and alleys, all decorated with flowers falling from balconies, smooth stone streets and the scent of jasmine climbing the walls.

The traces of this 3,000 year long history can be found above all in the Old City, an island linked to the mainland by two bridges, one of which is the famous Swing Bridge. The bridge defends access to the Mar Piccolo, the body of water in front of Taranto which together with the Ionian Sea has given Taranto the title of “City of the two seas”.

In the Old City you immediately come across the Aragonese Castle, symbol of Taranto, and immediately after the temple of Poseidon, whose son, Taros, is considered the founder of the Apulian city.

From here you enter the heart of the Old City, a complicated tangle of decadent houses, dark alleys or those overlooking the sea, sumptuous palaces and underground hypogea. An alternation of contrasting feelings: on the one hand an ancient beauty resists over time, on the other the idea of a wasted opportunity for Taranto and its inhabitants takes hold.

Don’t miss a visit to the hypogea which are present under every building here and a half day at MArTA, the National Archaeological Museum, a treasure chest. Among the churches, the “Cappellone” of San Cataldo with its baroque sumptuousness is an unmissable stop. A panoramic tour around the marina and then along the “Ringhiera” is a must to enjoy the view of the Mar Piccolo and the Cheradi Islands.
